Meditation in the Yoga Tradition

One of the biggest hurdles to meditation is a lack of guidance and understanding about what meditation is. Meditation is the conscious placing of one’s attention onto a specific location or place. The location can be an external object, such as a tree, mountain or river, or it can be something internal, like an affirmation, a sensation or the breath. Each object has a unique influence on us and if we  connect in the right way, will lead to greater sense of well-being. The method of how we bring our mind into such focus is unique in the Yoga tradition. Yoga employs a combination of preparatory tools and techniques, including gentle movement, breathing, sound, visualization, etc. to more easily prepare the mind for focus. Whether you are new to meditation or a long time practitioner, these morning classes are the perfect way to incorporate meditation into your daily routine. Each week we will work with various objects and concepts of meditation.

Classical Pranayama Techniques

Through consciously regulating the way in which we breathe, we can change how our body and mind feel. According to the Yoga Sutras, the process of regulating the breath is called, Pranayama. There are many techniques and methods of breathing–some are stimulating whereas others down-regulating, some heat you up and others cool you down. Some are best practiced in the morning and others at night for the desired outcome of the body or mind experience. Having formal guidance is a necessity for a safe and effective practice. In this class we will explore how to work with various techniques, breathing ratios and preparatory postures to establish a proper pranayama practice. You will gain both an understanding of pranayama and its vital role in meditation. You will experience how pranayama can help to manage stress, energy levels, sleep, digestion, overall vitality and a plethora of further benefits. All of the methods we explore will be from the Yoga tradition. No matter what your level of experience, this series will benefit you greatly.
